Helping You to Make Money Online in Kenya

Verified Sites Where You Can Make Money Online in Kenya

Last Updated on March 15, 2021 By Walter Akolo 174 Comments

Which sites can I use to make money online in Kenya?

Here, verified sites mean sites that I have been able to make money online working on these sites, therefore I’m speaking from experience.

Here is the list of sites you can use and successfully earn that online income.

1. Upwork

This is currently the best and most professional freelancing website. It has lots of jobs and very professional clients. It pays very well. Writers here earn from $5 per 500 words, all the way to even $100 plus.

Upwork guarantees your payment. To be sure you’ll be paid, you should use the Upwork Desktop App for hourly payments or the client creates a milestone payment. Note that for hourly jobs you need to ensure that the client has a verified payment method.

This is the only site on this list that I still regularly use.

2. Freelancer

This is a site where you can easily get your first job, though it’s nowadays very greedy and low paying. The average pay here is $2 per 500 words for a freelance writer, which is pure slavery.

After you advance a bit you can get to up to $4 per 500 words. Due to the fact that it pays peanuts, it’s only good for a very new freelancer who’s just practicing for a few weeks. In fact, if you really value your worth as a freelancer, this is no longer the best site to use.

The main advantage with this site is the fact that getting a project can be relatively easy. This site also has so many freelancing opportunities ranging from writing and accounting to web designing among others.

One serious thing to note about this site and other bidding sites like Upwork is that you should always accept work from someone who is willing to create a milestone/escrow payment before you start working..

This way, you will not end up losing money. A milestone/escrow is a payment that a client creates and releases to the website before the project starts.

Neither you nor the client will have access to the cash after he/she creates it. If you successfully finish the project the client can release the milestone and grant you access to the cash.

Another great thing is that you are the only one who can cancel a milestone, the client can’t. He can only raise a dispute in case your work is not up to par and you refuse to cancel the milestone.

Feel free to ask more questions below in case you need more on this. Here is how you can make money online through Freelancer.

3. Fiverr

FiverrThe first time I checked out the Fiverr website I broke out in laughter. This is one site where you can freelance almost anything for 5 dollars.

Whether you want to write an article, dance dressed up as a hotdog or record yourself reading out someone’s poem in a nice voice, you can do it in Fiverr.

If you market your gig well, you’ll find yourself laughing all the way to the bank.

Here’s how to make money on Fiverr.

Add to The Make Money Online in Kenya List

The above are the sites I’ve personally gotten work from. You can do it too.

As time went by, I stopped focusing on such sites, but went on to getting awesome, direct clients. I recommend that to all veteran freelancers.

Freelancing sites have a limit as to how you can withdraw your cash. You may only be able to use PayPal, Payoneer, or bank transfer.

However, with direct clients, you can use any other means to cash out. You’ll love Wise, formerly TransferWise.

And if you get paid via Bitcoin, you can use my favorite marketplace, Paxful, to sell the Bitcoin and receive the cash in M-PESA, Chipper, bank transfer, etc. You get to choose from over 300 payment methods.

Feel free to join my free mini-course for writers to get awesome tips on writing.

Hello Walter, what a blog you have created here. I landed on your blog when I was on Google doing some research for a friend of mine who is in Kenya and want to find online jobs but most websites keep rejecting her saying they don’t accept workers from Kenya.

This is very frustrating because Kenya is full of educated and qualified professionals who have a lot to offer the online wok space.

Anyway, I am very happy with your suggestions. I am a blogger myself and I actually didn’t know just how hard it is for Kenyans to get online jobs, until I sent some websites to my friend and she wasn’t accepted.

I will share this post with her.
You have done a great job Walter thank you.

    Hello Walter!!!…
I swear you’re an angel sent from above.
I’ve been thinking about online jobs coz I want to start making money online. Unfortunately for me, I have ni skills whatsoever, no experience, nothing.
I have tried to do research to see where I should start but there are so many things that come up and I’m so confused.

Hence, allow me to ask what survey jobs entail, and are they advisable to pursue them??… If yes, which are the best sites that offer such???

      Hi Bridget,

Thanks a lot for your kind comment.

I’ve never earned from surveys. From my experience, it’s hard to get legitimate, well paying survey jobs. You can research for more on that since I’m not a pro in that. I usually say that if you want to go to point X, then the best person to advise would be someone in point X already. So I genuinely can’t help much on surveys.

I do freelance writing which is what I really love. If you’re interested in that, then I can give valuable pointers.

      Hi Dorine,

Data entry jobs are hard to get and mostly pay peanuts. Also there are many scammers in the field. There are very few people earning well in that area. I once asked a group of over 60k members if any of them has earned well from data entry, none had.

If you still want to go through that path, you can try using the sites here https://freelancerkenya.com/money-online/legitimate-freelancing-websites/

Otherwise, consider better skills such as writing and transcription.

Hi Walter, got a client on freelancer, after I finished his first assignment, I requested for payment and he said that, he only releases payments for words between 2500-5000, of which I have clicked today through the second assignment. To add on that, he says that I am supposed to create an excel sheet and write the number of assignments completed and the number of words, after which he may approve the payments. He says that approving the assignments takes 3-4 days after submission. Kindly, is this real? Comment please. Thank you.

      Hi Maureen,

Tricky. The site recommends you get a milestone payment BEFORE you start working. Always do that to stay safe. For now, do as he says and send the Excel sheet. Don’t do any more work for him till he pays. I hope he does. After that you can be following the site’s guideline above.

Hi Tabitha. Sadly nowadays Freelancer charges a membership fee. Should you add whatever payment option you choose, remember NOT to choose any paid membership. If the free trial checkbox is automatically checked, remember to either uncheck it or cancel the free trial before the month is over. I would rather you skip Freelancer and use the rest such as Upwork and Fiverr. All the best.

Am a Kenyan first timer on this site and have spent a couple of hour s reading through your blog.
    Its informative .
My query ; what is the newest updates regarding pay pal withdrawals? I know how to open a pay pal account
Is there any other bank apart from equity that I can withdraw my money ( I would want to use Family bank )
I would not want to use Equity

I have seen the other options is Skrill and ePay are they OK?
What kind of article do you hire people to write ;what is the average pay ; I prefer transcription for now

As for articles, you can join writing websites such as the ones mentioned on this post. You can also try selling to writelearnearn.com or dotwriter.com.

Hi Mary. I have articles here on how to make money on those sites. Two quick ways to learn:

      1. Get trained – Someone can train you on how to make it on each site. Trainers charge a fee. I personally have an article writing and blogging training that goes for Sh. 997.

      2. Train yourself – Take time, use this site, Google and YouTube to learn from other professionals. Also when you join any site, use their resources (help, faq, knowledgebase e.t.c.) to learn how to go about it.

      Thanks.

        Hi Tyler,

The key lies in assessing what clients are seeking, then designing/crafting your Gig to meet that specific demand, ‘putting on’ the buyer’s shoes, so to speak.

Look for a unique niche which you can serve exceptionally well, preferably one that is not too crowded. Tweak the Gig(s) now and then to respond to changing circumstances/market demand.

Christine don’t worry. I’ve been working online for four years now and it’s fine. You can receive payments through PayPal, Payoneer or Skrill perfectly. If you want to receive from PayPal then you have to open an Equity bank account. The rest are independent e.g. you can send cash from Skrill to MPESA and if you have the Payoneer card you can withdraw the cash from an ATM. Thanks.

My challenge with epayduka.com is their fees. To me 12% per transaction is way too high. This is without mentioning their vendor application fee though they are talking of a waiver.

Any experiences or knowledge of lipisha.com, pesapal.com, mobpal.biz or paygate.co.ke?

          Hi James,

          Thanks for your response.

I think of the ones you mention, PesaPal seems to be the more popular one. You can review their terms and see if you’re cool with their options. I think the only thing that bores me with them is the fact that when someone makes a credit card purchase, they’re asked to send their ID and image of their credit card, which makes no sense to me. Otherwise, they have great reviews all over.

Personally I have only used ePAYDUKa so I can not really say much about the others. In fact, I’ve just heard of them now.

          I hope this helps.

      Hi Mary,

Try out Elance, Fiverr, iWriter and Freelancer. Look out for health related projects on all these platforms.

Let me know how it goes.

      Regards,
      Walter

      Florence,

Thanks for your comment. Try out GlobeSkill.com. I have also ever hired Kenyans in freelancer.com.

      I hope that helps.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

You can do affiliate marketing where all that is automated.

For example, you can become a HostGator affiliate and whenever someone signs up through your link you get $50.

          All the best 🙂

          Hi Mercy,

These sites are free to join. You don’t need to pay anything.

            Hi Ed,

I’ve never used it. You can research to see what others say about it.
