Helping You to Make Money Online in Kenya

Legitimate Freelancing Websites Where You Can Get Online Jobs Without Paying a Single Cent

Last Updated on March 15, 2021 By Walter Akolo 227 Comments

legitimate freelancing websites

Working online is awesome, especially when you’re working on legitimate freelancing websites that pay you for your hard work. It can be demoralizing to work on a site only to realize that it’s a scam website.

Here’s a list of legitimate sites where you can work without barriers such as joining fees or country restrictions.

You don’t have to pay a dime to join these sites and they don’t have problems with Africans or non-natives. You just need to be able to provide quality, professional work.

So, what are those legitimate freelancing websites?

General Freelancing Sites

  1. Upwork.com
  2. Fiverr.com
  3. PeoplePerHour.com
  4. Kuhustle.com
  5. Guru.com
  6. Solutioninn.com
  7. Golance.com
  8. FreeeUp.com
  9. FreelancingGig

Article Writing Websites

  1. TheContentAuthority.com
  2. Ezdia.com
  3. dotWriter.com
  4. ClearVoice
  5. Constant Content

Transcription Websites

  1. TranscribeMe.com
  2. CastingWords.com
  3. SpeechPad.com
  4. TranscriptionStar.com
  5. GoTranscript.com
  6. TranscribeTeam.com
  7. Scribie.com
  8. Take Note

Graphic and Web Design Website

99designs.com

Translation Website

  1. Proz.com
  2. Tomedes.com

Job Boards

  1. ProBlogger Job Board
  2. Indeed
  3. FreelanceWritingGigs
  4. Listiller
  5. Reddit

Add More Legitimate Freelancing Websites

You can add more sites on the comments section below.

Also let us know if you have had a good or bad experience with any of the above (or other) websites so that guys can know which ones to join and what to expect. I had previously reviewed a few.

Here’s an excellent resource by Time Doctor.

Note that I may not have a good idea about all mentioned sites so I’m learning also.

Click on each individual site to see it’s terms, pay etc.

I just compiled them from trusted members of the Awesome Transcribers in Kenya Facebook group and did some additional research. Some of these sites also reached out to me and I validated them before adding them to the list.

Remember I don’t recommend overly relying on such websites. It’s good for all freelancers to get direct clients. That way you can earn more, get flexible terms, and get paid using great platforms like Wise (formerly TransferWise), Payoneer, and Paxful.

Over to you, my friend. Let’s have a meaningful discussion on the comments.

That doesn’t make Kuhustle a scam. Every site has a way to get fees. However, like you, I don’t like their model. And for that reason, I don’t look for work there at the moment.

This article is very useful, as it is essential to know what websites are indeed trustworthy especially if you are a job seeker. A few years ago, I was looking for a job in a freelance company. I have been browsing different web resources and reading numerous comments and reviews to understand what company to apply to. It is hard to make a right decision, as you cannot be 100% sure that the agency you want to work for is a good one. Well, I tried. I have read that 4writers.net is a great resource and this article has proved it one more time. It is easy to create an account. It takes just a few minutes. Oh, I has not mentioned that I am an editor. Since the system is very simple, choosing orders is a piece of cake. You can see the deadline, topic, academic level and other assignment details. Such a comprehensive system allows you to understand at once whether you can handle it or not. Today, I realize that I have made a right choice. I am completely satisfied with my job and can say that it is worth reading comments and feedback as they help find great companies 🙂
P.S. Thanks Walter for doing a good job. Your post will help job applicants avoid failure when looking for a job.

I have tried to join the transcription and article writing world, but the results aren’t encouraging at all. First, I worked on iwriter in 2013 but they became more strict leading to my departure after they closed of my several accounts. In 2015, I joined speechpad and gotranscript, and couldn’t match their standards either. As a result, I joined the drunkards and drained all my savings from formal employment. Though I attribute the dismal performance to my poor oratory and language skills, I fail to understand why I performed well academically, and couldn’t replicate the same in the above areas. How can I make a turn around in the field soon since I am also contemplating returning to formal employment or farming nisahau nlisoma?

      Hi Mbugua,

      Sorry for the challenges faced.

You’ll need to really sharpen the axe. Learn as much as you can about this before you attempt again. You can either self-train or get someone to train you.

I’ve worked with speechpad and scribie. If I were to choose I’ll go with scribie because it’s just easy money. Speechpad has more money but you’ll sweat most.

It is good Walter that you have created such an informative post! Now, everyone will be aware of good and bad resources. I would like to make my own contribution to this page. I see the website I have been cooperating with for two years on your list. This is 4writers.net. I have been working as a writer. You know I often hear that online companies force their writers to take the orders they do not want to work on. Fortunately, I have never had such an unpleasant experience when working for 4writers.net. I can decide on my own whether to take an assignment or not. I do not want to go into details. The only thing I want to say is that they demand quality work. If you are doing a particular project, you need to complete it perfectly. As to the payment (I think many users want to be aware of this aspect), it is possible to earn up to $14 per page. I think it is quite a competitive rate. I do hope I will help someone to make a right choice.

I also want to share my experience of working for one of the freelance companies. I have been working for 4writers for more than three years. Most of all I like that they pay salaries on time. Sure, this job demands deep knowledge of different subjects. You need to be responsible and punctual. However, a job is rewarding. I hope my advice will help someone.

Remove Writedom from that list. I worked with them for a year, then they force assigned me an order, a PhD paper that I had not applied for. They said that I was only going to write the part that didn’t require to be plagiarised. However, in between they introduced new terms and decided I should also code it. Long story short, I had my account terminated because I refused to accept the new terms. The previous writer who worked on that same order was treated in the same way. They have had their run. Writedom was good last year, however, everything they serve now is just a bitter pill. Work with them at your own risk.

I should also mention that they took my $230 upon closing the account. They waited for me to finish a current order then closed it. I did not take the action of plagiarising the papers by publicly posting them on any domain. I do what is right in all my dealings. I let them have their way knowing God will do right by me.

Hey Walter. Mine is a bit off-topic but it’s about iWriter. I was recently upgraded to premium level, but there are very few jobs and most of them are from clients with a very low approval ratings. Someone who has approved 5 articles and rejected over 30. I have worked before on an article of someone with that rating. While the work was of high quality, they ended up rejecting it and giving me a 1.5 star rating. This affected my overall rating and temporarily pushed me back to standard. I was able to work on 4 more jobs that gave me 5 star ratings and I got back to premium. I have referred a friend there, who is still a standard writer. When we log into our accounts simultaneously, her account shows that the premium level has over 100 jobs with some having an approval rate of up to 99%, while mine shows few jobs with low approval rates. I have contacted support but they were not that helpful. There are other people going through the same. You have experience with iWriter, maybe you can shed some light. I currently have a 4.2 star rating and keep checking the account day and night. Did I do anything wrong. Thank you

      Hi Yaz,

It’s true, somehow when in Standard you see more jobs on Premium than they actually are. When you get to Premium there are more jobs than Standard but not as many as you may have seen.

Never work for those people with very low approval rates. High chances are they will reject yours too. Go for 70-100%.

      All the best.

I experienced the same issue a while ago and the iWriter support would not resolve it. I still don’t understand it to date coz there are still less than 10 jobs posted at premium level, while there are more than 200 premium jobs while viewing the through a standard level account.

When I worked on 8 pages they send too many irrelevant revisions, also with other 4 and 3 pages I worked on. I tried to work on them but tried to cancel some orders. leaving my efforts unpaid for. I don’t advise people to own brilliant writing account. Thank you.

Great write up Walter. now i have a full list to keep trying as diversification. Personally i work with upwork and when you develop your own niche, its simply awesome and second to none.

However, i have also worked with Writersph, 4writers.net, writerslab and freelancercareers.com. All this are wonderful and they are legitimate cz they pay.

The only downside with freelancercareers.com and writersph (same family with essaywriters and Asiawriters) is that they can close your account without notice. Besides, wako na penalties za upuzi when you fail or delay to submit a paper.

4writers is a take account so ukipata job, take and begin working, also wonderful but work ni seasonal.

BOTTOM LINE: working online is awesome and depending on the company, you will keep your account for ages if you deliver high quality work.

    Thatz my 2 cents here.

      Hi Jarred

      Thanks for your kind words.

I appreciate your review of the different sites. You seem to have quite some experience.

I hope many more will try out those sites and earn from them.

Hi Walter, thanks for this list; I can see some new websites I never heard of before. However, Academia-Research…..who really ever is successful in placing bids? I am asking because for one full year I never got a single order assigned to me and eventually I gave up on it. How does it work?

This a great compilation of sites that remain hidden to many up coming writers. I never heard of most them, didn’t even know there a sight called Kuhustle.com until today. I shall sure stop by each site and get more information. I encourage others to spread their wings wide and write for new platforms. You never know where the real spread is kept.

    Thanks Walter. Great Job!

Very informative post that takes out the guesswork and leaves the real stuff on free lancing. I kept on stumbling from one free lancing site to another, had my share of rebuffs and disappointments due to their unfavorable rules and gradually learned which sites needed to be given a very wide berth.
This post is long overdue, especially for newbies. This is a must read for any new freelancer . Saves one a lot of time and helps them hit the ground running. Thanks Walter for this valuable information.
