Helping You to Make Money Online in Kenya

How to Withdraw from PayPal to Equity in 3 Days

Last Updated on October 16, 2020 By Walter Akolo 308 Comments

Phew! When this service was unleashed, it felt like we’d struck gold. Finally, it was (and still is) possible to withdraw from PayPal to Equity in just 3 days.

PayPal Working Directly With Equity Bank

Just a few years ago, it was extremely difficult to withdraw money from PayPal in Kenya. Many options came in while others quickly faded away.

You may not believe it but there was a point in time where Kenyans earning online would have to pay agents more than 20% in commissions to receive their PayPal cash.

In short, you would use an agent to withdraw $100 but only receive $80 or way less. Seems hefty now but back then there was just no other option.

Those times are gone, thanks to a few advancements. Equity Bank is currently one of the best PayPal withdrawal methods for Kenyans.

Their 3 day withdrawal service officially started on 1st September, 2016. I remember testing this a couple of times back then to make sure it works.

And, indeed, it worked and still works right now :).

So, how exactly does this go?

Let’s dive in.

How to Withdraw Money From PayPal to Equity in 3 Days

Below, I show you how to do this step by step, there are a few points you should note.

  • You can register on your phone or computer browser. The images below were taken from Google Chrome.
  • You’ll need your phone nearby since you’ll get a couple of OTPs (one time passwords) on text.
  • Allow popups on your computer browser. If you don’t want to allow popups for all sites, only allow them for this process as shown below.

Got it? Great. Let’s do this.

1. Register at the Equity Bank Self Service Portal

Go to the Equity Bank Self Service portal and register.

Equity Bank Self Service

2. Key in Your Personal Details

Make sure all the fields with a red star (*) are filled in. Those without a red star are optional. Also make sure the details are correct, especially your email address and phone number.

PayPal Cash Via Equity

3. Enter a Strong Password

Since this system links your bank and PayPal account, it’s imperative that you use a strong password for security purposes. Your password should contain 8 characters or more. It should have a capital letter, a number and a special character. Something like jktEf8$zmj.

Secure PayPal Withdrawal

4. Read and Accept Terms and Conditions

Read and accept terms and conditions. I know you usually don’t read such hahaha. You have to accept them to use the service.

Equity Bank Self Service Terms and Conditions

5. Enter the One Time Password

Like I told you, you’ll have to enter a couple of these OTPS during registration. There goes your first (check your texts). Once you enter it, click on “Complete Registration”.

Equity OTP

6. Log in

You’re now almost ready for the good stuff :). Log in so that you can link your Equity Bank account with your PayPal account.

7. Link Your Bank Account

If you have an existing Equity Bank account, simply enter your account number to link it. You can also create a new one.

8. Enter OTP

Another OTP will be sent to your phone (SMS). Enter it.

OTP

9. You’ll Get a Confirmation Message after Confirming OTP

Awesome. You’ve now linked your bank account.

Equity Account Linked

10. Link Your PayPal Account

Click on the PayPal tab to start this process.

Link Your PayPal Account

11. Enter Correct PayPal Details and Select the Bank Account to Link To

PayPal and Bank Account Linked

12. Allow the Popup

If you hadn’t allowed popups, you’ll get an error. Click as below to allow the popup. Note that after allowing you will have to start the PayPal linking process again (from point number 10 above) till you get here. Don’t worry, it’s just a few clicks.

Allow popup

13. Authorize PayPal

Once you authorize, you’ll give PayPal permission to do the two actions highlighted below. Therefore you won’t really have to log in to PayPal to check your balance, you can do it through the Equity system and withdraw right from there too.

Authorize PayPal Preapproved Payment

14. Check the PayPal Confirmation

You’ll get a confirmation notification both here and in your email.

PayPal Successfully Linked to Equity

15. Withdraw from PayPal to Equity

Yipee! Congratulations for getting this far. Now you can do the withdrawal from PayPal to your Equity Bank account. Start by clicking on “Withdraw Service” and fill in the short form. Once you click “Accept”, you’ll get a confirmation message here and on your mail, stating that you’ll receive the cash in 3 days.

16. Check your Equity Bank Account Balance in 3 Days

After 3 days, check your Equity Bank account balance. The cash should have been credited there :).

17. Other Services on the Portal

There are other services that you can use on the portal as you can see below.

Other Equity Services

How Much Will You Be Charged for this PayPal Withdrawal Service?

At the time of updating this, Equity Bank’s fees vary depending on the amount you’re withdrawing. See below:

Equity Withdrawal Rates

Is it Safe?

Yes. This is Equity Bank’s official PayPal withdrawal method (and self-service platform). Therefore, it is secured with top-notch technology. This is further fortified by the OTPs – meaning some random user can’t hack your account since they don’t have your phone with them.

You can always call Equity Bank or PayPal any time to confirm this.

Final Thoughts

Finally you can withdraw from PayPal in 3 days

See that guy on the image above?

That’s how most freelancers felt when the above service was launched. That a new dawn has come. Most people never thought that things will one day be this easy.

The most exciting development in this scene is when PayPal formed a partnership with Safaricom and TransferTo (and currently Thunes) to start officially offering PayPal to M-Pesa withdrawals and deposits. This was announced on 9th April, 2018. More on that here.

Meanwhile, use the PayPal withdrawal method above for fast and swift services. Things really look positive for PayPal in Kenya.

For those who are experiencing difficulties, you can contact Equity via their details below:

Facebook: Equity Bank Kenya

Twitter: @KeEquityBank

Email: PayPalSupport@equitybank.co.ke

Phone: +254763063000

If you’re looking for alternatives to PayPal, you can consider using Skrill, Paxful, Payoneer, or Transferwise. Each has its benefits.

What do you think about this service? Do you still use it or you prefer PayPal to M-Pesa? Let’s talk more on the comments.

Hallo Walter. I just received an email from paypal saying I can now access my funds after they permanently limited my account. I had only linked Mpesa as the withdraw option. I tried withdrawing and its saying , “oops, the withdraw could not be completed. We were unable to capture the funds”. Is there another way to go about it?

    Hi Walter,

I have followed the steps and it was successful. However, I’m being told that the PayPal account has been delinked or linking failed, even after receiving an email confirming that the bank account was successfully linked. I have tried many times but it keeps on delinking until I doubt if the service is still available. What can be the problem? Please help me ASAP before the USD-KSH FX rate drop.

      Thanks for your comment.

One PayPal, one bank account. Good thing, you can add up to 8 email addresses to one PayPal account.

      I hope this helps.

    Hello Walter,
Just a few questions to ask.

    1. Must there be some money in your equity bank account using this service

2, I have successfully linked my equity bank account, What about the ATM card, must it also be linked?

      Hi George,

      Thanks for the questions.

      1. No.

      2. If your account is not verified, you need to link a card. It’s not mandatory that you link and verify using your Equity Bank card. You can do so using any other debit (ATM) or credit card.

Not sure how it works for Ugandans. You can try the method above and see if it will work out great for you.

If it doesn’t, contact Equity Bank via the contact details posted above.

Let us know how it goes so that other Ugandans get to know how to do it.

      Hi Norman,

I don’t have a stake and wasn’t even paid to do this. It’s just a post about the great experience that many of us have had. It is not in any way sponsored by Equity Bank.

Just like any other system in the world, some people experience errors here. I’ve had people who’ve gotten the same, gone to the bank and gotten the issue fixed. Sometimes it’s something as small as the phone number not entered in the right format, or an account that was opened online, etc. So you just need to contact the bank and they’ll assist.

      All the best.

Sad to know there’s no solution yet.

If it’s been limited but you can access the cash, you can still use the Equity portal for that. I hope the limitation gets lifted soon, though.

I still have no idea why you can’t access the cash or the balance. The best people to help there are either Equity or PayPal.

      Hi Nelson,

So sorry for the challenges faced. Back then when we didn’t have the Equity service, people used a few PayPal agents who would find a way of exchanging the cash at a fee. Try and see if you have those in TZ.

Meanwhile have clients pay you through Payoneer, which works fine in most countries.

It would have been great to just use Kenya. In fact, create a Kenyan PayPal and you’ll be safe.

Yes, you may encounter so many problems with that US account. These include limitations, request for identification documents, request for SSN, IRA stuff etc. Drop it as soon as possible. Sorry, but you were misadvised.

You can ask your friend how he withdraws from his US account and try that. After that you can close and open a Kenyan one.

I tried linking my Equity account but no avail and even travelled to Equity but could not get it done. I changed the settings on Kaspersky which was causing problems and it worked. However, I can’t see my Paypal balance from Equity Portal. The currencies are in GBP and AUS dollars. The Paypal balance reads $0.00. What is the problem here Walter and you guys out there who may have come across this thing?

Hi K.K. It usually takes exactly 3 days. I hear sometimes it delays, especially if your Equity account is zero, thus they can’t deduct the commission payment immediately. In such cases, they load it manually then deduct the commission (1.5%) so you’ll get it in a day or two. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the awesome article. I’m a Nigerian. I opened. a Kenya PayPal account in 2016. Now I’m in Nigeria and I won’t be in Kenya soon. I need to withdraw from the PayPal account but I can’t do that to any bank in Nigeria. I called PayPal support and I was told the only way I can get the fund is to use Kenya Equity Bank. Now my questions:
    1. Can I open Equity bank account here in Nigeria through their online platform? if yes, Can I use my Nigeria mobile number for the registration?

    2. If the answer to the above question is yes and I’m able to successfully withdraw to Equity Bank, Is it possible to transfer the fund from Equity bank to my local bank in Nigeria

      Hi Patrick,

Sorry I’m not sure how things work in Nigeria. To answer your questions.

      1. I don’t think so, since they’ll need your Kenyan ID details and phone number.

      2. Since the first part is not possible, then this follows as well. But if someone in Kenya has cash in their account I believe they can wire it to you.

      I hope this helps.

Has someone been limited to how much they could withdraw through this system per month?
I have heard some horror stories of someone sending you 3000 usd but paypal only allowing you to withdraw a maximum of 500 usd a month….this way you only get bits of your money for 6 whole months.
I have a verified paypal account with card linked etc. but I am a bit wary about the possibility of having my money held by paypal indefinitely.

      Hi Ben,

You can withdraw up to $10,000 per day.

Yes, if a PayPal account is new, they will not allow you to withdraw huge chunks. They say it’s due to their security system or something like that. So you’ll have to grow it slowly.

When expecting a huge amount you can contact PayPal support and tell them what you’re expecting so that they adjust things on their side and allow you to receive without issues.

An established account that’s been in operation and received huge amounts for a long time can swiftly withdraw $10,000.

Hi Walter, how does one accept the first payment in your PayPal account before withdrawing with Equity? What is the withdrawal figure format? Is it, for example, 45 or 45.00?
Is it true that they can hold your money for 21 days, especially if your account is new or it’s your first payment?

    • Walter Akolo says

Hi Indie. You accept by clicking on the “Accept” button. You’ll receive an email with instructions. Withdrawal figure using the above method can be either 45 or 45.12. Just make sure it’s less than your account balance. So if you have $45.13, the most you can withdraw to Equity is $45.12. Yes, they can hold your payments for 21 days, but you can mark as processed to reduce the period. Most payments just clear immediately, though.

I withdraw my money from PayPal on Friday and the money is credited in my Equity account in the afternoon. This has also saved me some 2K a week that I used to forego so to get my money instantly from the agents. I think waiting for 2 days is better than loosing a whooping 2K. Hi Walter, your article is very informative on PayPal/Equity Withdrawal, which I intend to use in the earliest opportunity. I have always used Skrill since 2010 but I have customer who will pay with PayPal from the U.S. Of course can’t refuse. I opened a Merchant PayPal a/c confirmed the email address tested with my friend who sent me $10 successfully, But now my client indicates the payment has been declined by PayPal. What do you think is the issue? In the meantime, I have reset all “Payment Receiving Preferences” and removed all restrictions on payments and requested the client to resend the payment. Hope It will work this time. Any other issues with brand new Kenyan PayPal accounts such as receiving limits you are aware of.

      Hi Barrett,

Thanks for your comment. Congrats on your clients and the work you’re doing. Sometimes PayPal refuses to send cash to new accounts. If you contact them they tell you it’s a security thing. The client can start by sending small amounts and slowly increase. The error resolves itself after a while.

You still have not addressed the issue about Preapproved payment plans. Remember some people have not yet received the money into their paypal, in that it is still yet to be accepted or declined. So when you accept you are taken to a page where you are supposed to link a bank account. Which we both know is impossible because it still requires a bank account from their approved countries. The last thing is what is the least amount to withdraw in this service? And do I need first to accept the money into my PayPal account for it to be moved to equity?

      Hi Bill,

From experience, you will only need to accept the first payment that lands in your PayPal. The rest will automatically be accepted, unless they come in a different currency from your PayPal’s primary currency. If your primary currency is USD and you receive Euros, you’ll have to accept. No need for adding a bank. Once you receive you can use this method. Yes, you have to accept before moving to Equity.

I’m not sure of the least you can withdraw with this service. I believe you can withdraw as little as $1. The maximum is $10,000 per day.

Hi Dennis. In the above process you just link it to your bank account, no need for an ATM card. If you haven’t verified your PayPal account, you’ll need a card for that. For tips on how to verify, click here https://freelancerkenya.com/going-about-paypal/paypal-in-kenya/

So disappointed with equity. Three days after the transaction and no cash in my account. Only to call them to be told there were system issues on the paypal platform,. It seems they have no way to inform customers of such delays yet have all contact details with them.
I will be wary to transact with them anytime soon after this. I am used to such as Paypal or payoneer, or even skrill who deliver when they promise to.
Equity has a long way to go.

Just gave it a shot and I am stoked! Been an ‘Onliner’ (online worker) since 2006 and back then I had nightmares trying to withdraw from Paypal to my Kenyan banks. This was well before I discovered Skrill (Moneybookers back then) and sort of shelved my Paypal account, meaning I had to decline several projects where clients would only pay through Paypal. This is indeed a great step!

Well this just made my work easier. Just did a withdrawal although I had a little trouble. Say I had xxx.xx as my balance and I tried to withdraw that same amount and it said what I was trying to withdraw was less than my balance. I checked my balance just to confirm I was withdrawing the exact amount I had, still had the same problem so I tried with drawing xxx.00 it worked. Am I missing something here? Shouldn’t I be able to withdraw the exact amount to the last cent?

Great news! However, Skrill already has an instant Mpesa withdrawal service that is a million times better than any PayPal withdrawal service. Bank withdrawals also take less than 3 days and unlike PayPal they support all major Kenyan banks.

So my advice to my fellow freelancers is to always insist on getting paid via Skrill and only accept PayPal if there is no other option.

You can enter 8 characters for now, then finish setting this all up. After that you can feel free to go back and correct the ID details from the system. Just my opinion though.

You can still feel free to contact Equity and tell them about the bug so that they fix it for others who have similar issues.

That is the greatest news for freelancers this year. Probably, as freelancers, we should also push Safaricom to try and expedite the deal. While we all have issues with Safaricom, my interaction with them has made me believe that they take their customer feedback very seriously. Last week i contacted them over poor network in Imara Daima and today they sent me a message informing that they will install a booster by April next year. So, if we all contact them over the paypal issue, they will most likely take it with the seriousness it deserves.

Thanks for the update! I personally think this is amazing!! I was thinking about this just today, how nice it would be if we could get money in 3 days the same week like US paypal. UK PayPal is clearly the best with its 5 minutes withdrawal and no commission and withdrawal fees but hey like you said we all have to start somewhere.

About the 2.5% that is the only bad news I am totally against. paypal already charges their 2.9%+30cents so that would mean you incurring 5.4% + 30 cents which is still on the high side but manageable.

Only thing they need to do now is stop trying to make PayPal a 3rd world PayPal because we its in a 3rd world country and allow us to create buy buttons which they currently do not allow or have as an option

Thank you so much for sharing Walter!!! This is clearly some great news

Thanks Joshua for your detailed response.

Yes, I hope with time we’ll get to the levels where US PayPal or UK PayPal are. I love Skrill which is actually very cheap and efficient to use even here in Kenya.

I totally agree that we start from somewhere. It’s actually been a long time coming before Equity came up with this solution.

With such a great initiative, it’s my hope that other banks and institutions will follow suit and eventually we get better solutions. Or other sites that are better and less discriminatory than PayPal (such as Skrill) get more acceptance online.

I believe with a business account you can create buy buttons. I used to use a couple of those buttons here way back till I realized everyone wanted to pay for my stuff using MPESA which was even better for me :D. For clients I prefer Skrill. As you may see in some other posts in this site, I’m generally not a big PayPal fan – but just use it where there are no other options.

      Thanks again Josh.

    Hi Walter,

That was a long, credible, data-based, solid, Illustrative, not to mention, detail-oriented post,.. I’ll definitely be laughing all the way to the nearest Equity Bank ‘mtaani’ agent in remotest parts of Shamakhokho …just ran out of words to express my joy! No longer will I tell Mr. Shimeche my local shopkeeper that ”pesa itafika next week'” NEVER will he respond “Kwani pesa yako inakujanga tu next week” Gone are the “ebu nisambazie, maze client ametuma $$ kidogo na broker atakula mob”” He, he, he, Mpesa will definely be a game changer considering the fact you get money in split second. Just love the the changing dynamics of digital money transactions.

As obvious, I happen to be among the first few to test something new in the market. I have already used this platform. Actually, I withdrew on Friday, 1st, afternoon and was able to access the money come Monday, 4th in the evening.

However, on that Monday morning, there was an issue with the server. I could not access my accounts again. It later seemed to work. Yesterday I wanted to withdraw, but it was the same issue!!!! I think they just published something that is still in Alpha stage. It should not be a final release as far as I am concerned.

The only problem is that no other bank seems interested in saving the freelancer with their PayPal funds. However, whenever my clients are willing to pay with Skrill or Neteller, I am glad to have the cash in less than a minute.

I hope one day KCB will support this service, I will switch permanently. Even so, I am making arrangements to switch to Payoneer. It is quite convenient than this immature platform.

Those are just my words. It makes me fear they are going to wipe the database while the transfer is in progress and money gets caught somewhere. I just hope it does not happen.

To all freelancers, all the best with your online endeavors. Forget not to work hard when there is work is available.

    Regards,
    Mathias.

Awesome Minda. I also always love being the first to test new things.

Yeah, there are a few times when they go offline a bit then come back on. I believe their web guys are working on fixing that. This, however, does not affect the three day delivery – at least from my experience.

After years of working online and experiencing PayPal troubles, I consider this a welcome move. Sure, KCB and the like should dig in. The more they compete, the better it will be for the online freelancer.

Sorry, it’s no longer possible to add Payoneer USPS for new PayPal users. Those who added it before 2014 can still use their existing accounts. But for anyone else, that is no longer an option thus they’re stuck with Equity.

Don’t worry, no database will be wiped. No one has ever lost money through an Equity withdrawal for the years it has been in existence.

      All the very best.

Hi Philip. This is actually easy. Simply don’t withdraw more than you have on your PayPal balance. E.g. if you have $101.26, you can withdraw $101.26 without any issues. Otherwise the currency converter is what Tim was talking about, in that you won’t know what that $101.26 will amount to in KES until it hits your account. Which is actually a minor issue since you can always check Equity bank’s prevailing dollar rates. You can also just wait the three days and see the amount that hits your bank account.

A great move by Equity and should do more as Skrill currently beats them coz you get your cash to Mpesa in seconds. Hi Murungi. You can only link one PayPal account to one Equity Bank account.

I guess this leaves you with two options.

      1. To keep linking and de-linking your PayPal accounts. This may be tricky with PayPal since they may flag that as suspicious activity. Not recommended.
      2. To create multiple Equity Bank accounts and pair them with your PayPal accounts. This looks safer and you can create those bank accounts straight from the self service portal.

      All the best.

This is great news Walter. First, having worked for 5 years as a full-time writer, I consider this as the biggest positive gain for freelancers who rely on PayPal for payments. Withdrawing money was always a headache with long waits prior to this huge change and unrealistic commissions by agents.

The service is proven and working great, and shows that PayPal will one way or another gain a stronger foothold in Kenyan by offering more efficient services. I hope Safaricom joins the bandwagon too, which would make withdrawals a breeze.

However, I would like to point out that I have used the service and it is very efficient but with comparison to FNB withdrawal, Equity missed a point. As for my opinion, like for the FNB, they should inform us their current rate in terms of USD to KES and also inform us the amount we expect in KES. Contrary, this system just sends a notification of the withdraw in terms of USD.
