Helping You to Make Money Online in Kenya

Should you start from the bottom or just boost your productivity?

Last Updated on June 6, 2018 By Walter Akolo 103 Comments

Boost your productivity

What should you do? Should you start from the bottom? Should you boost your productivity?

See, I want you to succeed. Never forget that. One day when I’m old and gray, I’d want you to say “Walter genuinely helped me to succeed. He wrote to me straight from the heart.”

This post is about APPLYING KNOWLEDGE to super-charge your PRODUCTIVITY.

The tips I’m sharing here, if implemented carefully, may save you a couple of years. I mean it. Imagine how great you’d feel if you were many years ahead of your competition. This post has absolutely no links. It’s not selling anything. Without any strings, I just want you to boost your productivity.

See, I’ve been training people for 5 years now. Not sure how long I’ll keep doing it. Not sure how long I’ll keep offering freebies as well.

But while at it, I looooove it! I pray I’ll be able to produce some of the best and most successful trainees ever. I hope my free stuff produces excellent results. Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, so says the good book! Pray for me that all this comes to pass.

Never settle for average or below average

I have some questions for you:

When was the last time your client gave you a bonus?

Have you ever been given a raise without even asking for it?

Has your client ever referred you to another equally awesome client?

Have you ever gotten to a place where a client refuses to let go of you? They’d rather increase your rate and give you perks to just have you as their guy? (Hehehe… Feels great to have someone refer you as their only go-to-guy by the way.)

Have you ever sold something that went viral and started selling itself?

If your answer is yes to the above questions, then that’s fine, you can proceed with what you’re doing. Thank you.

If you answered NO to any, then this post is for you.

I’LL START WITH THE KNOWLEDGE PART AND SOME HORRIBLE TRUTH FOR YOU

Truth: You’ll NEVER be paid for what you know.

You’ll only be paid for what you DO. In short, you need to keep APPLYING what you LEARN. Applied knowledge pays.

I was once clueless as to what online work entails. And I hate being clueless! I needed KNOWLEDGE. I had a burning desire to learn.

First, I wanted to get the course by Kelvin Njoroge (Kelvin Nganga on FB) of Make Money Online in Kenya. This was Kenya’s best blog on online work back then. Now offline. At the time I couldn’t afford the 1k to pay for his course.

I STALKED the blog, learnt a lot and left my comments everywhere on that blog. To “pay” him, I used lots of his affiliate links and shared his stuff all over.

The most expensive form of learning

I learnt the haard way through blogs, YouTube and Google. I got great results. However, I made lots of costly mistakes that a good mentor would have helped me avoid.

This was my most expensive way of learning. Yes, I felt like I learnt for “free”, though it took lots of time and energy. But the costly mistakes actually costed me a fortune.

I learnt somewhere that professionals hire coaches. I decided I’d be getting trained by a professional whenever I’d want to do big things. My trainers are not just pros, but the BEST in their fields. Some paid, some free.

I’ve learnt a lot from guys like David Kiongo, Larry Keya, Alex Maina, Strive Masiyiwa, Sheeroh Kiarie, Bamidele Onibalusi, Kristi Hines, Mark Ling, Noah Kagan, Napoleon Hill, Neil Patel, Dean Graziosi, Brian Dean etc. These were/are all the BEST in something I needed to learn. There are many more. Not forgetting my biblical heroes!

What you call learning for free may just be the most expensive form of learning you’ll ever get.

As a famous person once said, scared money makes no money.

Yes, go ahead and learn for free if you have absolutely no resources. But after you get some little cash, please take structured courses and read books written by successful people/coaches/professionals.

The first course I ever paid for

I needed passive income to supplement my active income. Affiliate marketing would do.

I paid for my first course — AffiloBlueprint. That’s the best course in the world in affiliate marketing, at least in my view and from my research. No, it does not go for KES 1k, 2k or 3k. It went for a whopping $77 back in 2012. I read it all and implemented what I learnt.

This course laid a foundation, not only for my affiliate marketing business, but for all my internet marketing stuff. That includes what I’m writing right now.

“Walter, you’re NOT just a writer, you’re a super-productive, brilliant, zealous internet marketer,” said a neighbor last week. “In fact, you should change your title from writer to businessman or marketer. You give your clients RESULTS and not just content!”

He was witnessing the RESULTS of years of structured training, which all came from the great foundation I got from the first course I paid for, which was THE BEST course I’ve ever done to date. Start strong! Foundation matters.

By the way, I paid $77 for this course and a few days after completing it, I got a $900 internet marketing deal! That paid back for the course and left me with $823. It’s like the course was free, right? Wrong. It gave me way more than I put in. It still helps me.

My response was I’m just a writer

Was my neighbor right? Am I now a marketer and not a writer? I guess it may be true to some degree…

BUT…

I get all results by writing — both for the clients I write for and for the stuff I market.

It’s all about writing. Not voice. Not video. Not picture. Not even physical meetings. But writing. Right? Hehe… I even retain this throwback, 2013 photo as my profile pic everywhere! And a throwback 2015 one on WhatsApp!

Walter Akolo

I also have thowback videos on YouTube.

Note that I take hundreds (maybe thousands) of crisp, high quality, HD pics of myself and my family every few days! I loooove pics and videos. I’ve talked and even lectured people for hours. I used to host powerful seminars in town in my first few years of online work. And I’ve been hired by the behemoth, Rockefeller Foundation, to train trainers. But right now, I want people to focus on MY WRITTEN WORDS.

By 2020 or thereabout, I may heavily add video and other things to my writings. Part of an intricate plan that I laid out in 2015 and guys thought it was a joke.

Be sure that before I get to video, I’ll first pay for the BEST course on video.

Before I do that big international gig that I’m planning for in the year twenty-twenty-something (probably 2022), I’ll do the BEST course on public speaking.

Of course all these will only happen if God wills. I’ll follow His will if He directs me any other way.

Which adds to my point today. You don’t have to be trained by me. Maybe by the time you decide you’d want me to train you, I’ll have already stopped offering the course as it is and shifted to other things.

Or I may remove the evergreen training (accepting many trainees all year round) and only take up a handful of trainees 3 times a year!

The point is this:

Get trained by someone who cares and values your success. Hehe… I recently saw one of my favorite writers/trainers on earth shutting down his course.

Why? Because many people thought he was just teaching for money so he simply pulled down his courses to show the world that the course wasn’t his bread and butter. It was his way of helping the society. As usual, the bad words of a few messed up for many.

I’ve seen someone closing her huge, helpful Facebook group for the same reason. And others pulling down their blogs. Some because of other things, and others because they let people’s opinions get into them.

So, yes, I’m a writer. For now, I’m perfecting this writing art, which will, prayerfully, be a HUGE stepping stone to bigger and better things. Writing is how I earn from clients. Writing is how I market. Writing is how I mentor. Whenever one field fails, I swiftly shift to another, that still involves writing!

Once you find your true purpose in life, polish it. Now, get this point very clearly:

Whenever you want to boost your productivity, go for the best course you can afford

Why do I write so well?

Hehehehe… I don’t. What you’re seeing is because I keep GETTING TRAINED to write. I’ve already listed my trainers/mentors above and some are brilliant writers. I’ve even just added an eBook “Elements of Style” to my reading list.

I have others on my reading list like “On Writing Well”. I constantly, consciously learn how to write. I’m not there yet.

Why do I market so well?

Because I keep getting trained to market. AffiloBlueprint (the first course I paid for) was awesome. I’m also now reading “How I Lost 170 Million Dollars” by Noah Kagan, one of my favorite marketers of all time. Learning a lot about how Mark created Facebook, one of my favorite sites of all time! That’s a free eBook. Get it from Amazon and read it.

What about my training?

Yes, you’re write. Hehehe… I mean you’re right! I get trained to train! Look out for Mirasee and you’ll get amazing insights over there.

SOME TAKEAWAYS FOR YOU

Takeaway #1. Professionals hire coaches

Get trained by the BEST in your field. Doesn’t have to be me. But get some structured courses and buy some good books. Learn daily. I mention this for your own good.

If you can’t pay for training now, learn for free. Lots of amazing free courses and eBooks floating around.

But when you get some little cash, get structured paid courses that come with mentorship.

Google and YouTube can’t mentor you e.g. they can’t assess your profiles or samples and tell you to your face if they’re awesome or absolute crap. When it comes to internet marketing, Google can’t check your individual blog posts and campaigns and tell you what to improve.

And if you’re the futuristic type, some of the things you envision haven’t been written about yet in Google. At least not the way you visualize them. For example, the guys who created Google, Facebook, Uber and other awesome innovations didn’t “just google it”. Oh, haha, Google couldn’t google how to create Google.

A coach/trainer “catches” your personal mistakes and mentors you to do better. Sometimes they just build your confidence. They help you build up on your “crazy” visions that haven’t been done yet.

Someone telling you NOT to pay for any course/coaching is not doing you a favor. Sorry to say this but most are still in their growth journey. They still don’t know the value of coaching.

Read from them in 5 years and I bet they’ll have gotten some professional help somewhere. Some free, some paid. If not, there are high chances that you’ll overtake them. I’ve been blessed to overtake some of my biggest mentors. Mostly because I’m constantly learning ways to get better.

That’s why I say that you save a couple of years by doing this:

If you want to get to point X, get tips from someone who’s already at point X. Not one who’s still in their growth journey and doesn’t even believe that point X exists.

This in itself can be the biggest productivity boost you can ever get!

Takeaway #2. Always apply what you learn, or you’re just wasting your time

It doesn’t matter whether you were trained by Obama, Dangote, Strive Masiyiwa or Mark Zuckerberg. Doesn’t matter if you learnt for free from YouTube, a free mini-course or a free eBook.

You get ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if you don’t apply what you learn. Zero. In fact NEGATIVE. It will be all a waste of time for both you and whoever coached you!

This one is self-explanatory. Nothing valuable comes from laziness, idleness, indecision or lack of courage. This brings me to my next point.

Takeaway #3. Boost your confidence, daily. Most who did great things had to first BELIEVE they could do it!

Have you ever seen a successful person who is not confident? No. Getting a dose of “confidence” daily may be all you need to go to the next level.

How do you get this? By reading, watching or listening to something that motivates you every single day. I’m now into books and courses. Some of my friends are into YouTube videos, TED talks and even physical coaching/mentorship. Others listen to powerful podcasts or even audio versions of their favorite books.

Whatever you choose, start your day by feeding your confidence.

And consider starting your day early, not late. I learnt that from a productivity course I recently took i.e. Become a Writing Machine by Jon Morrow! I’m trying it out and it’s working wonders. Hehehe… Imagine I HATED waking up early since my school days till now. And now, at 32 with running businesses, I’m waking up at 5am and loving it! This world can be strange sometimes.

Takeaway #4. You don’t have to start from the bottom! That’s one of the biggest lies people tell you…

I started writing from the bottom because I had zero money. With zero cash, you have limited choices.

I started marketing light years ahead of most people! With some little cash for a course, I started with the very best marketing course I could get.

The bottom is boring, scary, confusing, uncertain and unprofitable.

As I said, I’m reading this eBook, How I Lost 170 Million Dollars: My Time as #30 at Facebook. I may have finished it by the time you read this post 😉. Already halfway through.

It talks a lot about how Facebook was built. It has some deep principles about Mark Zuckerberg before the limelight. I’m learning that Facebook was always, and still is, years and years and years ahead of most other sites.

Mark Zuckerberg didn’t start from the bottom. He kept learning and learning and learning. He also hired the most brilliant guys to work with him, straight from the start — way before Facebook was launched.

And now Facebook is social media. And social media is Facebook. It may stay that way for a couple of years. Take time and read about other dominating brands such as Google, Microsoft, Apple and Coca-Cola among others. You may learn so much, especially if you want to one day create a world-dominating brand.

Noah Kagan earns millions of dollars right now. Failure stories sometime teach even more than success stories ever can. The fact that he lost millions, recovered and is making even more millions, can literally blow up your mind. That’s why I’m reading and I even recommend his brilliant, free eBook. Just google “How I Lost 170 Million Dollars by Noah Kagan” and read it all.

I finish with this powerful point:

Takeaway #5. Hire smart people to not only boost your productivity, but also to achieve even greater things!

The wealthiest, happiest and most successful people I know don’t work on their own. Their effectiveness is measured by their ability to get OTHER PEOPLE to produce.

Think about your favorite spiritual or business leader. They NEVER WORK ALONE! They hired, coached, mentored and built their empires using OTHER PEOPLE! For those who got the epitome of business success, they hired the smartest people around.

I’ve talked about not starting from the bottom (if you can start from the top or somewhere in the middle). Hiring smart people may just be the thing that will take you to the 1% of the most successful people worldwide. It will super-charge your productivity since you will only focus on what you’re best at, and get smart people to fix the rest.

I know this is a hard teaching, but most highly productive guys don’t work on their weaknesses — at least not to the point of being obsessed about being strong in all their weak areas. They PERFECT whatever they’re already good at. They then hire smart people to take care of other things.

Your mind is too powerful to waste; it’s the best tool you’ll ever have. But it only works if you…

….APPLY KNOWLEDGE.

Don’t just get knowledge and let it die in your brain.

Get someone to mentor and motivate you.

Don’t accept the lie that you don’t need a mentor, YOU DO!

Boost your confidence daily.

Please please please if you can, don’t start from the bottom. Horrible place to be.

When you get some little success, hire smart people so that you only focus on your strengths as they fix your “weaknesses”. Mentor many others. They’ll be part of the journey some day. Remember that saying of being good to people on your way up.

These things may just make you LIGHT YEARS ahead of your competitors. You’ll be one of those ever-smiling smart people. Other guys will be telling you “Hey! Did you just read my mind? How did you do that?”

Simple. No one reads minds. However, if you’re years ahead of NOW, you look back from the future and smile. Think about that! It’s deep, so you may want to read that a couple of times.

Never give up. And with God on your side, there’s absolutely nothing you can’t do.

This post gave me the same feeling I experienced when I read the likes of Ralph Wado Emerson, James Allen, and Genevieve Behrend e.t.c. I have never stopped wondering how a person sits down and comes up with such thoughtful and deeply inspiring content. To see this happening here, Walter, I am lost for words. I have followed from a distance from as far back as 2012/2013. All I can say is that I have wasted so much time.

“As a famous person once said, scared money makes no money.” Some quotes are quite relevant. I’m curious what’s involved in your course apart from ability to market yourself through writing?. My situation is a bit unique. I just need to take the plunge and prove that quote wrong.

    I love this!

You keep teaching me new things all the time. I have learnt what it means to commit myself to something.

For quite a while, I had been thinking and doing so average. But made up my mind one day to get serious with my freelance writing career….I signed up with Upwork slightly over 2 months ago and things are getting better. One of my clients keep referring other clients to me….even when I least expect.

I now know what it means to start, believe in myself and in my abilities and be really really committed. I enjoy doing what I do.

Oh, and I just downloaded Noah Kagan’s book. Thanks for having shared that info too. Reading it now and can’t seem to want to put it down any time soon…except that I have some work assignments to do.

I keep on learning from you! I keep discovering new things everyday!
    Thank you Walter!

Noah’s book was amazing. I’m glad you read it.

      Keep learning. Keep implementing.

    Hello Walter,

You have left me mouth open. Where do I start ? I have leaned a lot from this, and I have equally been encouraged.

I like the part where you say, get and a mentor and when capable of paying for a course, do it!

When I started freelancing, I was reluctant of paying. For one, I had no money. Two, I believed I could have learned through YouTube. That was wrong.

My first training is from you. Of course paid. Hehe I remember those days when you were firm at$30. Where could I have picked this kind of amount? Thanks to God I was able to raise it and pay the fee. I’m now different. I’m proud of my $30 training than the procurement course I’m still taking that has coated me hundreds of dollars.

Thank you and thank you for your effort to make tons of Kenyans successful. In the past we have been perceived as lazy and con people. You’re reversing this. I hope Kenya will one day be the go-to-country for writers.

    Denzil.

Sure, Kenya is going places. Let’s keep doing our best. Every single one of us.

      Stay blessed.
